African Masks

Monday, September 21st, 2009

African art is crafted by many different tribal groups expressing their own rich heritage. From the distinctive West African sculptures, Zulu power statues and then to the art influenced by religious affiliations, African art is truely expansive and impressive. In the last century we have seen a great appreciation for the splendor of African Art. It is known that renowned artists such as Picasso and Matisse received their inspiration for many of their most beautiful works of art from viewing African sculptures.

I have long been amazed by the African carvers amazing skill and craftsmanship. It is most evident in their Masks carvings. Each masks is one of a kind and each carry much symbolic meaning.  The color patterns ways and unusual carvings across the mask are made with purpose and much cultural significance.  On my last trip to West Africa I met a group of carver and and saw their amazing ability first hand. Below you can view the picture of them making their works of art.

Wood Carvings

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

It is known that the wood carvers from Kenya are from the most talented in the world. So how do they carve these masterpieces of art and culture?

The process of carving is a multi-step procedure, which requires specialized labor. The first phase begins with the selection of the finest logs of wood cut from already fallen trees. These logs are then dried in the sun until their maximum level of durability, strength, and reliability are reached. Then, expert carvers begin a complex procedure, in which they chop, chisel, and sheer the logs to form a rough shape of the actual item they are producing. This first stage may take anywhere from one day to several weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the item.

The second phase entails sanders and detailers who sand and smooth the item to a fine touch. Again, this may a few days, depending on the specific item.

The last phase involves expert finishers who apply layers of polish, paint, and other accents to complete the piece with a finishing touch.

There is a tremendous amount of love, devotion, creativity, and expertise put into every piece that is produced for you, our valued customer. So, feel free to enjoy to visit our Site and decorate your home, office or store with any of our beautiful carvings.

Perfume Body Oils

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Are you tired of paying alot of money for alcohol based perfumes or colognes? Well I was, so I started buying and selling perfumed body oils. Designer fragrances like you see in department stores are usually overpriced, highly diluted, and overbearing. While perfume oils are just the opposite which makes them a much better purchase. These oils contain no alcohol, are reasonably priced, and are not overbearing. That’s what makes them an ideal choice for your perfume and fragrance needs.

Perfume oils are now very much in demand.  For a fraction of the price, consumers are a buying a product that is skin safe, purer and longer-lasting. Many people that I talk to who purchase perfume oils rarely buy perfumes and colognes again. An additional advantage of perfume oils is that those consumers that are allergic to perfumes and colognes are rarely allergic to perfume oils. People may be allergic to perfumes and colognes due to the high content of alcohol found in the product.

We at Back To Africa have been in the fragrance business for many years. Our customers have told us that our oils are of excellent quality and they love our prices. We carry over 400 unique scents as well as the empty glass bottles to re- package them. To see a list of our fragrances Click Here. To check out our glass bottles Click Here.

How It All Began

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

It’s been over 38 years since my father’s first trip to Tanzania, Africa. He went with one goal in mind: to enjoy a relaxing vacation in one of the world’s most exotic and intriguing countries. Little did he know at the time that that small vacation would serve as the basis for the establishment of Back To Africa Imports.

My father was so amazed by the beauty and elegance of the African art that he came across in Tanzania, that he decided to purchase a few pieces with the intent of attempting to sell them in his retail shop in Manhattan. To his surprise, the demand for the African products was enormous. There were so many people of all races who were intrigued and interested in the African culture and art. Consequently, subsequent trips to Africa were made and a love for African art was born.

The most paramount consequence of the innovation was that it provided many of the poor Africans in Africa with a profession, while it allowed many Africans in the United States to enjoy their rich and historic culture.

Throughout the years, we have traveled to all parts of Africa to bring you the greatest collection of African and African inspired merchandise in the world. That great love and passion for African art has been passed down to the next generation. Since then our selection of unique African merchandise has expanded to include wood carvings, soapstone carvings, ebony figurines, clothing, jewelry, fragrance oils, incense and burners, Shea Butter, body care products, shadow boxes and many more products.

We are constantly introducing new products, so tell us if there is something you would like us to start to carrying.  We are all ears!
